I had the feeling I was doing something wrong. When I first started vidding, all I did at first when I ripped the footage (AVI) was change the name-- .VOB to .MPEG, and it imported just fine. I didn't really have any tutorials and taught myself how to vid, and now I'm SURE that's probably the problem? It seemed to work and I didn't have a converter back then.

Yeah, you and a lot of other vidders make this mistake. I tried it a few times too. Sometimes it works okay for a while, and then your software will rebel. It's not really recommended. (And don't feel bad--how are you going to know unless someone tells you? ) This tutorial explains some of the reasons why: fpvideos.proboards60.com/index.cgi?board=tutorials&action=display&thread=208The only solution is to just stop editing .vob (aka MPEG) files, and convert to an editable codec, like DV AVI, or Lagarith AVI . . . we've got tutorials here which show you how to do that!

I can't tell you how much your tutorials have been my salvation, Elvira! That's exactly what's happened -- Mpegs worked for about 8 months and then my software started rebelling! It was so frustrating, I had no idea what was wrong, and it's going to be pleasantly shocking being able to have trouble-free footage! • Frequent crashing of the editing program. (Been there, done that.) • Frames being displayed out of order. (Yep.) • Smearing, blocking, and other types of video artifacts. (Yep, yep, yep.)It got so bad I was exporting bits and pieces in two-second segments and putting it all back together again - good grief! Life is too short to make videos that way! I downloaded MPEG Streamclip (thank you thank you THANK YOU!!) and tried converting a trouble scene. I was worried because it kept shutting down when I tried to import using the File menu, but one of my genius brothers tried List>Batch List and imported it that way, and I was still able to follow all the directions in your tutorial. Hopefully, that's okay . . . But the result was beautiful!! It's was like a dream come true, and I cannot thank you enough, Elvira!! But I'm not looking forwards to re-ripping about 10+ hours of movies onto the computer. If I'd only known this sooner! People -- stay away from MPEGs!!!! They will only cause you grief!!

Oh my gosh, Jazhara, I never knew it could get that bad with MPEG. I mean, I knew it could be bad, but goodness. I am so glad that our tutorials helped you. Yes, your testimony is most compelling about the evils of editing in MPEG-2. (Same thing can happen with XviD, DivX, etc) I have had no problems with editing ever since I started using DV or Lagarith or one of those other good codecs. Things go so much more smoothly.

I am totally in love with MPEG Streamclip and the DV files!! No more slow lag!! You can actually SEE what you're editing! I can't believe this is what video editing is really supposed to be like! *is in video heaven* I don't know how I ever put up with editing in MPEGs. It was terrible, the worst frustrating thing ever. Your tutorials are a vidder's salvation, Elvira!! If only more people knew about the proper codecs and aspect ratios! A couple days ago someone on YT told me that they didn't know how to rip DVDs, and right away I pointed him to 3 of your links!

Before this forum and learning about Mpeg streamclip, vidding was such a chore- I would give up before I'd even started!! Ripping clips took forever and then finally (after a billion hours) you could start your video. Now everything's so easy!! I love this forum and the fact that it's made me completely and utterly addicted to vidding.

Thank you for your kind words. I am so glad that you are enjoying vidding so much now, and that these tutorials have helped. That's why they were written! I have people to thank too, for getting me on the right track and pointing me to the right tutorials. Thank you sereenie, if you are reading this. ( www.sereenie.com ). Look at her videos' quality. Gorgeous.

Dumb questions....
Okay, I'm using Dvd Decrypter for the first time ever. Once the movie is done ripping, how do I get the files to the MPEG streamclip to finish converting?
(A month ago, I wouldn't have been brave enough to try this on my own. But it looks easy enough.)

Bravo, I'm glad you're going to try it, WildRoses! Go to this tutorial: fpvideos.proboards60.com/index.cgi?board=tutorials&action=display&thread=20It'll give you all the details. You'll be converting the clips to DV AVI. Or . . . you can follow this tutorial: www.foolishpassion.org/vidding-tips/virtual-dub-mod.html I just checked, and my current PC accepts Lagarith AVI files from WMM, but another Windows installation I tried it in . . . didn't. Do a quick test with Lagarith if that's the way you decide to go. Either of these options will work GREAT. (DV AVI with MPEG Streamclip, or Lagarith AVI with VirtualDubMod.) DV AVI with MPEG Streamclip is quicker and easier, but you may have to get the $20 plug-in. (You don't have to if you're on Windows. Read the tutorial for more info! )

So the MPEG streamclip converted something. However, I keep getting a message that 'the parental setting of this player won't play the movie.' Where do I go in the MPEG to override that?

I don't know. I can't recall ever getting that error. Have you installed either Quicktime Alternative (making sure to install the right version, like the MPEG Streamclip site instructs) or do you have the MPEG-2 Playback component installed? If you got the VOB files to open and you were able to successfully convert a clip to DV AVI, then perhaps you got a setting wrong somewhere. I'd suggest trying again, encoding a short clip, and seeing how that goes.

It converts the first few seconds of the film: the Miramax logo and the gives the dvd federal warning. But the clip starts and ends with the parental thing. My computer isn't set on any parental lock, nor are any of the programs I have installed, so where would it be coming from?
The hair pulling continues. Now, the movie won't play in my Windows Media player because it claims I don't have the right codecs installed to play the movie. But it played before tonight (before I downloaded the dvd decrypter and MPEG streamclep and MPEG-4 link that you have listed.). Gah! I have to call the Dell folks once every few months--and it appears I'll have to call them to override the wrong codecs I have installed that are preventing the movie from playing. (I have a dvd player on my computer--and though I rarely use it to play dvds, I like to know it is working.) But I downloaded the MPEG codec linked on your page so I don't know why it would override mine (It was an MPEG-4 codec link.)

Oh. You have tried to open a small VOB file. That's not the main feature. It's just a short file that is played when you first start up your DVD. Look for LARGE VOB files (about 1 GB in size) as these contain the actual film. It sounds like you're doing okay if MPEG Streamclip will open the VOB files. And you downloaded the MPEG-2 Playback Component, so that's going fine. Just keep poking around until you find a large VOB file and open that. As the tutorial instructs, you may be asked if you want to join several of them together, and if you want to do that, say yes. There are other things that MPEG Streamclip might ask for as well, and the linked tutorial on FP.org gives you instructions on how to deal with all of them.

...And, this is why I'm ever reluctant to mess with my laptop. Vistas are *hell*. I wouldn't have bought it if I had know the reputation it has. It's new, so I have to live with it for a few more years.
Everytime I install something, it messes up something else somewhere else. It really is a pain. I'm pretty good at being able to figure out stuff on my own (even though I'm far from a techno-geek) but when SIMPLE applications affect my laptop---well, you can see why I'm so leery and cautious and have a more laid-back.
When I use the decypter, I also keep get these two messages:
'failed to set data for'
and
'failed to set DVDdecryptorplaymovieonarrival.'

I almost never say this. Almost never. Maybe you should consider a Mac next time! (It really is excellent for vidding. And it has all the mainstream apps, like Office and Photoshop . . . something to consider, anyway . . . Vista is the reason a lot of people are getting Macs, I hear . . . ) Okay, if you read my post above, you'll know that all you need to do in MPEG Streamclip is open a larger VOB file until you find the episode or feature you're looking for. There are a lot of odd little files on a DVD rip, so you have to do some poking around.
