I noticed this too, although I've got an upcoming video that's from a movie in super high widescreen, and it definitely is nice in certain situations. According to a test I ran, that new feature allows me to get rid of the letter boxing entirely for those very narrow vids.

I think it's just a glitch. If you click on the button right above the top right corner of the video (it's a grey square that looks like this: <-- -->), the video will shrink down to a more rational aspect ratio. Oooh!
